FROM THE OFFICE OF JIM WARING:
January is human trafficking awareness month and the City’s Human Trafficking task force has been busy working to end human trafficking in Phoenix and Arizona. I want to thank all of the task force members for their hard work and dedication to this issue.
Yesterday, the Phoenix City Council unanimously passed an ordinance and policy change that will make punishments for “Johns” harsher.
Here are some of the other activities that the task force has been up to.
Last week, we held a press conference with Cindy McCain to talk about the accomplishments of the City’s task force and the Governor’s council. Both groups have been collaborating and working on awareness efforts to make sure people know this is happening in our city and state. You can watch the press conference here.
Sergeant Bray and I created a video on indicators to look for in the community on human trafficking. This will be shared with City staff, the Governor’s council and is available on the City’s website for people to view. You can watch the video here.
I also got to tour the Phoenix Dream Center and talked with Executive Director Brian Steele about their efforts to help victims of human trafficking. Brian and the Dream Center are working incredibly hard to help these young survivors by giving them a safe place to stay and resources to help them achieve their goals for the future. You can watch the video here.
Thanks so much,
Phoenix Vice Mayor – District 2
